never tryed an of them other than avg and that seems to work fine i download like crazy and never had a virus

its free and i like it, if a virus is on your computer it is taken care of right away.
I have used Kaspersky before. Now I use Nod32 and it good works on my PC and updates every day.
My own opinion is that strictly speaking at any given time one is going to be slightly better than another. So, I'd go with one that is easiest to use, and for me that's AVG.

This is a difficult question to answer, since what you consider to be an effective Anti-Virus program is ultimately a matter of opinion. The most popular Anti-Virus solution is Grisoft's AVG, but I personally use Alwil Software's avast! Anti-Virus. The advantage of both of these anti-virus programs is that they both have free versions for personal use.
