i need to turn off system restore to get rid of a file AVAST! cant scan,but the system restore tab is gone from the system property menu! I have done this before,but this time its just gone! The systems propert menu has tabs for:General,Computer Name,Hardware,Advanced,Automatic updates,and Remote! No system restore.

do a boot to safe mode (F8) and select last good configuration and see if it comes back.
remember, if you have to reinstall xp from the disks, you have to uninstall ie7 first. So download ie7 as a file and save it so you can re install it afterwards.
er u could try this: (chezzrobs edit)
system restore is part of the accessories package. you could remove then re install the package and see if system restore returns.
open add remove programs, select windows components on the side.
untick the accessories and boot the puter.
go back in and select it again then boot the puter.
see if the tab has returned
see if system restore is in the programs menu
click - start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
